Leigh Tuckniss-Riley (b.1989) is a Cape Town based visual artist specializing in painting. She graduated with a BFA from UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2010 and has subsequently worked as a senior phase visual arts educator before stepping into her own art practice full time. Her practice is auto-biographical and currently concerned with the subjects of mental health and her own postpartum experiences. She uses botanical signifiers as a lens through which to navigate these and relays them onto various surfaces with multiple painterly mediums, confidently moving between representational suggestions and abstraction. The results are evocative combinations of strong gestural marks and delicate layers and washes which further engage themes of identity, loss, grief, trauma and belonging.
Tuckniss currently lives and works in Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa with her husband and two daughters.
