Pia Truscott

Pia Truscott (b.1999) lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BA) at Michaelis School of Fine Arts in 2022 with distinction. Truscott additionally holds a degree in Anthropology (BA), which informs an artistic practice of paying attention to the natural and material world. In her practice, she explores how scrap material can be resurrected and made valuable again.

Truscott cuts, paints, sews and irons plastic packaging together to form colourful abstract works and tapestries. Through a process of tending, these works are instilled with a sense of value. She is concerned with uncovering material empathy. The found materials serve as an archive that has touched many lives. In this way, her work traces the entangled relationships between people and the material world.

Pia Truscott has participated in several group exhibitions in 2023, notably, ANTI-BOOTH curated by Church Projects at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair; The 2020s: New Forms of Abstraction - Part 1 at Berman Contemporary in Johannesburg and Loud and Clear at SMAC gallery in Cape Town.
