Yonela Doda, born in 1998 in the Western Cape, is a Cape Town based female collage mixed-media artist who graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Ruth Prowse School.
She mainly draws inspiration from herself and her own experiences. Doda’s interest in extended and prosthetic bodies, sexuality, intimacy, soul ties through sexual experiences , the Catharsis theory which was first used in a psychological context by Josef Breuer and the philosophy by Edward Casey, Chorography, has led to Doda’s deep connection with the physical and emotional aspect of her life.
Doda finds a lot of her inspiration from the things she wishes to fix within herself, while dealing with distortion and finding healing and purification from her own pain and insecurities. Doda shows this in the use of the needle and thread in her works as a way of communicating those feelings and mending them.
Doda also does Surreal and Dada-inspired collages hence the creation of her artistic identity: Dodaizm, which is a combination of her surname and what she describes as her artistic style.
