Inspired by the statue ‘Goddess of Victory’ (Winged Victory/Niké de Samothrace) in the Louvre museum
it
challenged me to ‘drape’ knitted grass. Using what I find around me I work intuitively using mostly plant fibres. Elevating out of the ordinary
a ubiquitous material like grass, came naturally
during a time of personal
trauma some years ago. Pieces of clothing started to take
shape in my hands, little protective
shrouds, knitted and crocheted. They became an obvious
metaphor for caring, protecting, clothing, as mothers do for children and for their own adornment and care. Celebrating
women's talents and strength, from traditional
‘women's handwork’ - weaving, making, binding, linking, holding things together, to triumphing over adversity and achieving the highest goals.
