A Group Exhibition

More than a record of physical appearance, portraits and visual representations of the human form have been used in art to express universal themes, emotional states, beliefs and as a metaphor for understanding ourselves and the world. Portraits provide insight into identity, status and history as well as relationships with self, others and the environment.

The body is used to capture complex emotions and ideas on issues of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and individual identity. Socio-political narratives have been explored by artists who create images of the human body as a form of visual activism (Kehinde Wiley).

Artists have used their bodies both as a tool in the creative process (Yves Klein) or as the canvas in the case of body art.   Performance art (Marina Abramovich, Ana Mendieta) accesses visceral aspects of the human experience by using the body itself as the medium or expression.
