Taking place in the height of Riebeek Kasteel's Summer, Solace shows how heat and the escape from it can come to dominate our lives, a force both physical and psychological in its glare, its stillness, its seeming inescapability.
Within this intensity, Solace searches for relief, with gestures of cooling: shadowed corners, quiet interiors, pauses that suggest escape from the blaze outside.
These moments do not deny the heat of summer but exist because of it, offering contrast and calm in response to excess. Solace ultimately frames summer heat as something both oppressive and intimate: a shared condition that drives the desire for stillness, care, and temporary shelter, turning the gallery into a refuge from the sun’s unyielding presence.
