During the course of our lives we are required to undertake many different forms of translocation.
This exhibition explores the idea of translocation and the impact these journeys and transitions may have on our lives. Translocation features the work of artists from Zimbabwe, Ghana and Germany, who are now residing in South Africa, as well as South African artists whose life paths have involved major changes in location or direction, in both a physical and metaphorical sense.
Translocations, and the situations surrounding them, can have a profound impact and contribute to who we are and our perception of the world. Sometimes transitions are easy, more often they are not. In the movement from one place to another, in being uprooted, beloved people and places are left behind. New countries, environments and cultures must be navigated. Using a diverse range of mediums – wood, clay, paint, collage and fabric – the artists explore the idea of translocation as they have experienced it in their own lives.
