WONDER
I wonder about our time here
And the enormity of living;
The vast expanse of places and people and feelings and curiosities to know,
And how impenetrable it can be
Like the navigation of a dense, mosquito-laden jungle.
I wonder about the volume of the sky when I stand outside at night stretching my arms upwards,
And even though I bend backwards, it is an act of supplication to souls that have gone before me.
Somewhere, in the mayhem of an ill-adjusted world in which there is a surplus of all the wrong things and a shortage of the good,
I wonder how to realign myself.
I think of animals and flowers.
I think of hands in the soil.
I’m reminded of Leonard Woolf’s statement in response to Hitler speaking on the radio in 1939: “I shan’t come in,” he shouted. “I’m planting iris, and they will be flowering long after he is dead.”
The wonder in the smallest detail that exists whether seen or unseen.
I think I shall sit quietly and watch.
